When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

An periapical x-ray should be taken of the tooth to see the extent of the decay, and also to see if an abcess exists at the end of the root!

It is possible - if decay is so extensive and spread out that on a small tooth you are describing it would be nesessary to do a pulpotomy (the "baby tooth root canal). It can be obvious, but having an X-ray done to confirm diagnosis would be a very good pragmatic thing to do.

As stated by others, it is possible to diagnosis a very ''''likely'''' need for a root canal on a child''''s tooth by visual exam alone. An xray should be taken to confirm. You should know that a ''''root canal'''' on a child''''s tooth is very different from a root canal on an adult. A baby-tooth root canal, or pulpotomy, takes about 5 minutes and is as painless as a filling. Hope that helps!
